How important is a pitcher's repertoire? Is a prospect with 5 pitches much better than one with only 2?

Skills are primarily what matters. Pitch Repertoire will tend to follow those skills anyway. Have more pitches doesn't necessarily make you a better pitcher.

Might it be better to place a "one trick pony" (guy with one great skill, and one or two pitches) as a reliever though? Is it like real life where that one or two pitches will get adjusted to on the second time through the line up?

Edit: Some guys who only had one or two pitches were some of the best closers in history is what I'm getting at.

I would think a guy with 17+ velocity and just a fastball would still be a pretty effective closer. His value versus another pitcher with high velocity and two or three more pitches would be lower for sure in a head-to-head comparison. He'd be more likely to be cut, unless he is really performing well in a specific role like a closer. Then he would make the decision between them harder.

In MLB, almost no pitcher has only one pitch. Although some pitchers throw one pitch predominately:

Haselrig does have a prospect with just 2 pitches - fastball and change-up.

Does that mean his movement skill is irrelevant?

Not irrelevant, but I might not expect a lot in that department (skill-wise).

Sounds like a limited repertoire might just be a valid reason to cut a prospect in favor of one with a better one. Or one with at least three pitches should one be available.

I personally wouldn't cut Madrid. I'm quite interested to see how he develops and performs. :)

I agree with Seca, he looks like an interesting case study. If you don't want him I'll take him just to see how he develops.

I'm still on a first generation rebuild, so cutting him would probably hurt more than any performance shortcomings his limited repertoire might present down the road would. He just brought the question up in my mind for prospects that I may have to choose between in the future.

That said, if somebody has a really good Catcher prospect they'd be willing to trade for him... pi5e7exz_T.jpg

Heck, I keep getting very good catching prospects. I have 3 of them, and McCarty is still going to stick around for a couple more seasons at the spot. Considering McCarty is 10 HRs off the all-time list and is still on pace to hit 39 this season with a career best OPS, catchers is a spot I have the opposite problem with. Pitching on the other hand...

Can pitchers learn new pitches during their training?

Just my guess but I'm thinking Madrid will have high velocity with very high change speed and control. I think he has the potential to be a very strong set up or closer.

I think Madrid can be a great closer.

It's a role I don't have any minor leaguer picked out for at this point, so I'd be happy if he ends up fitting in that spot. I'll have plenty of other guys to fill starter roles.
