Hi guys,
I don't know if you remember me, but 2 or 3 seasons ago I was talking a bit in the forum. Because it' s the off-season I decided to do a little study just for fun. The results are to be taken with a pinch of salt. I'm going to write this study in French because it's my native language and also in English so that you can understand more easily. So first I took the 100 current Legends League pitchers. And then I put their grades and statistics in a table in Excel. For each of the following attributes I calculated the correlation with the ERA which I multiplied by 100 to make the result more visual:
ERA/AGE: -22,3
ERA/EXP : -21,3
ERA/VEL : -6,1
ERA/CoS : 0,2
ERA/MOV : -26.8
ERA/CON : -5.1
ERA/STA: 10.4
ERA/Fld : -1.5
ERA/Rng : 1.3
ERA/ARM: 10.1
ERA/FIP: 60.5
ERA/BAA: 65.2
ERA/WHIP: 69.8
ERA/ST%: -24
So to understand what correlation is, you need to know that it is an indicator that shows how much when X increases Y increases. So when the ERA increases how much the actual statistic increases. So for statistics like AGE, EXP, VEL, Cos, MOV, CON, STA, FLD, RNG, ARM, ST% the more negative the correlation the better it's. However for statistics like FIP, BAA, WHIP the more positive the correlation the better it's. So we can see that the most important statistic is the movement. Concerning the Age, it seems normal to me because the more the Age increases the more the player has had time to progress and to have a better grade.
I then did the same for the FIP, BAA and WHIP.
I made the average of all the results and so I make you the classification of the marks which influence the most on the quality of your player according to me.
-VEL 17,6 (Huge impact on BAA)
-MOV 17,4 (Huge impact on ERA and FIP)
-CON 10,5 (Big impact on FIP and WHIP)
-Fld 8,7 (I don't know why but has a big positive impact on BAA and therefore WHIP)
- STA -1,4 (probably due to the fact that a player with a big STA will be pushed to his energy limit more often)
- CoS -2,6 (negative impact on FIP but positive impact on WHIP)
-Rng -3,6 (For RNG and ARM it's probably due to the fact that if the player progresses in his attribute there he doesn't progress elsewhere and so players with high scores here, will be weaker in the others)
-Arm -12.9
I hope this can help you with your recruitment this "summer". I have no idea if anyone has ever done a study like this (probably). But at least it will be updated.
