IV.3

Broken Bat Baseball
Spring Training starts tonight!

I thought I'd post where I'm at with my team. This is the start of my 9th season and most of the core that we've had for the last 8 years is either gone, or getting old.

C
Bishop has been our catcher since I started. We pitch better when Bishop is in, but he's 34 and his offensive output declined last year, and he ended up splitting time with Ramirez, who wil be our starter this season. We are waiting for Gilley who is hopefully the future, but he's only had half a season at AAA.

1B
Escobar is a 5 time gold glover at 1B, but he's 36 and last year his offense declined. I don't have a new 1B ready to go. We're going to try Valenzuela in the spring and see what he's got. But I really need to work on 1B.

2B
Escobar is a quality 2B and still young. He had a bad year offensively last year, but recovered towards the end of the season.

SS
Gotz is part of the core and a good SS. He just turned 32, so that's a worry. He's going to have to hang on a few more season because our future Yeager is still in AA.

3B
Uribe is solid at 3B, and in his nearing his prime at 28, so no concerns there.

LF
Hawke was out in LF for years and one of our core power hitters. He's 34 and still put up great offensive numbers last year, but his range really hurts, so he's more for power off the bench. The plan is to have Menendez be the everyday LF this season. He's rangey and can hit some.

CF
Calderon has been out in center for years, but he's only 11 pot, and at 32 he's declining fast. The plan (for spring anyway) is to try out the rookie Simpson at center. Lang is probably our future CF, but he's not ready yet.

RF
Newton was always out in right, but he's retired now. He never had the arm for RF, but his bat was the best on the team. We're going to try Posada as our everyday RF. He's got a great arm and I keep thinking he's going to hit better. He's had flashes.

DH
Terrell has been our DH for the last 5 years. He's got some power. But he just turned 32 and the numbers we down last season. 22 year old Bales is going to DH against lefties at least this season, and is hopefully our future full time DH. He doesn't have anywhere else to play, but he can hit.

Pitching
34 year old Ortiz has been our ace my entire time here. I don't have any other aces in the minors that I know of, yet. I keep drafting. I'm hoping for at least one more season out of Ortiz.

31 year old Medlin has been solid at #2. He's only 11 pot, so his decline could be quick in the coming year(s). I'm still hoping he's still good at least this season.

Puente has been our go to lefty out of the pen. He steals everyone elses wins, but I'm ok with that.

Coulter was our other good lefty out of the pen, but he's 35 and it was time to go after a steady decline into negative territory over the last two seasons. It's really hard for me to find good lefty pitching. I tried waivers but failed. We're going to try 28 year old rookie Donald, fresh off the free agency market. I don't have a lot of confidence in this decison, but we'll see how spring training and cup go. Otherwise I don't have another lefty ready to go.

The rest of the pitching staff are pretty solid out-getters. We will watch them closely and swap them out as needed.

That's my team :). I don't think they'll be great, and I don't think they will be terrible. Trying to hold in IV.3 is the goal.
