I don't understand the training portion of the game yet, do I somehow pick which players are scheduled to receive training? This week it looks like I only have an extremely small # of players in training but have lots of relatively young players

All players receive the same training. But they progress on sub-levels. Meaning they gain 0.02 Hitting. You only see when a player "pop" to a new round number in the training report.

?? .02 ?? is that right? if you mean .02 points of hitting skill, then to advance a full point would take 50 updates, or 5 years...am i missing something? or was that a typo?

Forget the actual number. The idea is it's a fraction of a point. Besides, players improve skills at different rates.

Is the rate of Training advancement based on Potential?

Probably. And probably some sort of hidden talent skill.
