So I got bored/curious and decided to go through every game I’ve played this season — including Cup, excluding Spring Training — to see just what sort of results I was getting from my hit-and-run game this season.

I’ll preface this with a few caveats:

» I play an aggressive running game and have hit-and-run set at either + or ++ on literally every batter on my roster.
» The results here include hit-and-run attempts by both my team and my opponents.
» My sleep schedule is screwed all to hell and back, and I only just woke up before starting on this project. I make no promises of entirely accurate figures. @.@

————————————————————

94 - Hit-and-run attempts
36 - Base hits (.383 — includes 5 infield hits)

Running Game

» 15 - Runner did not take extra base on ball to outfield (.160)
 » 16 - Runner(s) took extra base or scored normally (.170)
» 16 - Runner(s) took extra base or scored normally with less than two out (.170)

Note: “Scored normally” equates to having scored from third on a single, from second on a double, or from first on a triple.

Out(s) Recorded

 » 26 - Runner forced out (.277)
» 1 - Runner thrown out trying for extra base (.011)
 » 14 - Batter forced out (.149)
 » 0 - Batter flied/lined out (.000)
 » 17 - Batter struck out (.181)

Double Plays

 » 0 - Grounded into double play (.000)
 » 0 - Lined/popped into double play (.000)
» 6 - Strike ’im out, throw ’im out (.064)

————————————————————

 My takeaways from this:

» Runners are as likely to go for an extra bag as not. (I do wish I had narrowed by field, though.)
» Runners will not try for an extra bag if there are two outs.
» Double plays only happen if the batter strikes out.
» Batters will not fly/line out on a hit-and-run.
» The lead runner is more vulnerable than the batter by far.

Hopefully that is just small sample sizes. It would be really bad if hit & run actually protected you from normal double plays.

I’ll probably spend some time in the offseason going through every Rats game as far back as I can before it’s all just box scores.
