Goodbye Aaron -
by John Foster on January 25th, 2016
The well-known manager of West Applewood Knights Aaron Martin has retired after 19 seasons at the club. It was rumoured that the club struggles with the salary of Martin even though they wanted to keep him as long as possible. This announcement sounds like the end of a long love story.
Yet the starts were rough for Aaron as the team wasn’t competitive in the fifth division. Things got worse with the relegation in the sixth division in 2010. Aaron began the 2011 season in fear as he knew that failure will not be tolerated anymore. He managed to transcend the team and won the division by far even if he lost the playoffs.
This was the beginning of the best years of the knights’ history with 4 promotions in 5 years. The ascension in Legends was postponed 2 years and finally became true in 2018 with an astonishing final where the knights won the West division by only 4 runs.
The legends period was not so successful and the clubs ended up being demoted in third division. In the heart of the fans it doesn’t matter as Aaron will be forever the one that brought them in Legends.
The task will be difficult for Jeff Valentini, the new manager of the Knights. Let’s hope that his experience in the second division will help him to lead West Applewood to new summits.
