The Drought is Over! -
by Uncle Crush on August 31st, 2024
For the first time in 52 years, the rebranded Peoria franchise will hang a new championship banner. In the first season of under the new ownership team and GM Uncle Crush, the team caught lightning in a bottle and took the West division of League VI.26 by storm.
The pitching staff wrote the story of this team, leading the league in nearly every major statistical category, headlined by a 3.88 ERA and a whopping 86 quality starts. The veteran lefthander Mariano Mata took home Cy Young honors, leading the league with 19 wins and a 2.64 ERA. The bullpen was led by a three-headed monster of McGhee, Bryson, and McCartney; all of which had career seasons in Peoria.
Offensively, there is a lot of room for improvement despite the team success. Art Heath added yet another stellar season to his Hall of Fame career, bashing 34 homers for an 0.890 OPS while driving in 113 RBIs. The biggest breakout performance of the season offensively came from newly acquired Ramon Nevarez who signed as a free agent during spring training. Named a starter for the first time in his career, Nevarez responded by hitting 31 homeruns and driving in 122, while notching 50 doubles. Ramon will be entering his prime next season and hopes to build on this breakout campaign. Former number one overall prospect Craig Knepper slumped hard out the gates but finished the season with a 0.696 OPS as he looks to put it all together in 2066.
Following the season, ownership reached a deal with the city of Billings to bring the club to Montana with a rebrand to the Mountaineers. The team only spent one year in Peoria, but it was incredibly memorable, and GM Crush would like to personally thank the Central Illinois fans for their support.
