Broken Bat Baseball
The Minnesota Twins gave the legendary Yankees closer a custom-made chair composed entirely of broken bats, a clever homage to Rivera’s famous cutter pitch, which has broken more than its fair share of lumber.

The article misses the point. The writer clearly doesn't understand the significance of the gift. It's not just the broken bats that the chair is made of, it's the chair itself that is the main point of the gift.

The expression "Throw him a chair" refers to a pitcher striking out a batter and sending him back to the dugout, ie. making him sit down. Rivera has done that almost once per inning pitched in his career and with a 4:1 K to BB ratio. And he broke a lot of bats too.
