Have a team with a lot of pitching specialists so you can pinch hit? Bret Saberhagen pinch running in the 1985 World Series with his jacket on? (Maybe the sacrifice bunt will finally be forgotten in the closet where Earl Weaver thought it should be) DH's is where the money is, and I believe thats the main driver behind the decision..."Cadillacs are down at the end of the bat". Extends a few careers I guess, but I think MLB has decided fans want more slugging and less strategy. I also have lived a lifetime in the American League, so my feelings are merely philosophical about it. I am not sure it will be a big change for Greinke, his starts were usually so short he would only have 1 AB anyway xD Updated Saturday, March 19 2022 @ 11:23:26 am PDT |

As a life-long NL fan, I changed my tune on this about a decade ago. With inter-league and now the universal DH, gone are the days when the Reds DH would be the 4th OF or utility INF. No more AL pitchers trying to do something they hadn't done since high school. Cliff Lee sums it up best. |

Here's an article highlighting why modern pitchers can't hit. This stood out: Don’t say they can practice and get better. In modern baseball starting pitchers simply don’t have the time to do this, as they are spending the four days in between starts working out, tweaking their repertoire via bullpen sessions and watching video of their next opponent. And as Ryan Dempster told me two years ago: "So you go through all your pitching routines, and working out, plus, you have to be careful. You don’t want to be asked, ‘Why’s his back getting sore?’ and have to say, ‘Well, I was taking 150 swings a day in the cage.’” Updated Friday, March 25 2022 @ 6:26:24 am PDT |

In case you missed it, he was asked how to improve the club. His first (and second) response to the question was to make more money. The team president is the principle owner's son. The last GM was a minority owner's son. The manager is the son of a VP & Senior Advisor. The Reds are a toy for their kids to play with. |
