In 2053 Hillsboro saw owner rivalmejr introduce the beginning of Rival Ball, a heavy emphasis on platooning and lockdown pitching. 2054-55 saw this mostly abandoned with many members of the roster playing both sides of pitching. Hillsboro saw another need for Rival Ball to return, bolstering the roster with a plethora of old veterans from teams around the league. This has led to a very offensive RHP lineup but extremely defensively focused LHP lineup. Without further ado, your 2056 Hillsboro Pikas starting Lineup! Catcher- Carl Matthew/Lorenzo Nava At catcher we see the return of Hillsboro favorite, Carl Matthews. Coming into his age 34 season Matthews provides contact ball with elite on base percentage. Matthews will mostly find himself in the 3 spot of the lineup. When platooning, 3B Lorenzo Nava will move to catcher to help with defensive adjustments needed against LHP. 1st Base- Colby Watanabe/Brian Vaughan 1st base was a hard position to fill with the loss of long time first basemen Martinez and West. With this came the move of former outfielders Watanabe and Vaughan to the position, elite hitters looking to use their bats to compensate for their defensive downfalls. Watanabe was a possible cut this season, but Hillsboro felt it best to keep the lefty hitter this year against righties, while Vaughan provides a power bat against lefties. 2nd Base- Andres Cardona Second base is one of the few positions on the hillsboro roster with no platoon present. Cardona has made himself a mainstay with elite defense and a bat that seems to only catch fire when the game is on the line. Cardona defense will hopefully provide the pitching staff with much needed stress relief when on the mound. 3rd Base- Lorenzo Nava/Jorge Arenas Longtime third baseman, Lorenzo Nava sees himself splitting time between catcher and thirdbase, providing a crucial leadoff bat to the lineup with passable defense. At third we also saw the introduction of Jorge Arenas, a solid righty hitter who acts as a defensive rock at third, excelling at what Nava cannot. Short Stop- Tommie Sellers/Brandon Seibert The biggest change for Hillsboro, short stop, has seen a complete change with Sellers and Seibert providing lockdown defense as a change was needed from Corey Orr subpar defensive capabilities in probably the most crucial defensive position. Seibert is slightly less capable at defense but provides a much improved bat in comparison to Sellers when facing lefties. Left Field- Julian Valerio/Billy Dewey Left field sees the return of Julian Valerio, a defensive liability that provides a solid contact bat. The bigger talk is long time utility and platoon man Billy Dewey being moved to left field. Dewey provides a solid reliable bat with solid defense in the outfield. Dewey has made a name for himself being a long time injury and platoon fill in for any positions that had struggled in the past against lefties. Center Field- Ken Bradley/Fabian Dimas Center field sees new faces in Bradley and Dimas, both solid hitters against their respective sides, with both providing a much needed improvement in defense in center field compared to years prior. Right Field- Carmelo Nunez/Gary Ogedard In right field we see breakout star Carmelo Nunez who put together an impressive 91 game season last year, hitting .318 against righties. Nunez also brings a cannon into right field, hopefully to provide a bolstered need for OF assist. Gary Ogedard provides a somewhat expensive but reliable bat against lefties with great range and a cannon of an arm. Designated Hitter- Brian Vaughan/Carl Matthews At DH we see the return of the Canadian Assault, Brian Vaughan. Vaughan has continued to provide a speedy power bat with 2055 being another 30 HR and 40 SB season. Against lefties we see Carl Matthews being provided some relief from the grueling Catcher position, able to still provide his reliable bat. Bench- Bryan Watson/Corey Orr Off the bench we see the return of 2055 rookie Bryan Watson who showed the beginning of a reliable OBP machine. A bloated roster and lackluster defense has relegated Watson to a bench role, earning his at bats off of injuries, spring training and the cup. On the other half of the bench we see Corey Orr, long time shortstop who may very well see himself cut. Orr provides great pinch running capabilities, and could be a solid option at 3B as a defensive injury replacement at the current time. |

We got here with dominant pitching and good hitting. This year marks the end of long time closer Cory Mathewson who executed over 360+ closes for Hillsboro in his career. | ||
