so, given that everything is not always as it looks here, is the scouting report generally accurate? or could you have a guy labeled as above average when he really is very good or vice versa?

That's possible...but scouting error is usually less extreme than that.

Yes...ultimately past statistics are the best indication of future performance. However, for prospects, they don't really have any big league stats, so you have to rely on skill values and scouting reports.

Sometimes the scouting reports get it wrong.

Greg Maddux Proved His Scouting Report from 1985 Wrong.

Even when the player's debut seem to validate it;
In 1986, Maddux debuted in the majors with the Chicago Cubs and went 8-18 with an earned run average above 5.50 in his first two seasons.

But after that he proves them wrong;
After that, he ran off 17 straight seasons with at least 14 wins.

The right-hander finished his career with a 335-227 record, a 3.16 ERA and a 1.143 WHIP. He was an eight-time All-Star, a four-time National League Cy Young Award winner and an 18-time Gold Glove winner.

And soon, the Hall of Fame.

this is interesting, as many of my players tend to seasaw in stats from season to season

in "real" fantasy baseball I also consider players minor league stats and do not only rely on BA prospects handbook scout reports.

This is true...but even in real life, statistics (especially batting average and ERA) tend to vary a lot from year to year. Plus in Broken Bat, your opponents change as your team promotes and demotes and other teams enter and exit your league.
