I have this player, Ramiro Cortez ("http://brokenbat.org/player/44261").
Even tho 30yo, with 5 years of experience, still he's without a defensive position.

What does it mean?
He's only capable of playing DH (even tho he's got good defensive skills= 13/18/13)?
Or rather he can play in any position?

That is, there's any kind of bonus for player with a defensive position, or it's rather a penalty for playing out-of-position?

I have included what I think are the relevant extracts from the rules:

http://brokenbat.org/rules#players
  • "Primary Position & Position List: the primary position (the position listed at the top right of the player page or on the left side of the roster page), is the position that a player is most experienced at playing. It's not necessarily the position he would be best suited to play in the long term. The position list (available on lower right side of the player page), lists all the positions that a player is experienced playing (those in upper case have more experience, those in lower case have less experience)..."

http://brokenbat.org/rules#players
  • "Defensive skills
  • Fielding: ability to catch a ground or fly ball without making an error.
  • Range: amount of space a defender can cover either in the infield or outfield.
  • Arm: strength of a defender's throwing arm, important for completing double plays and for throwing base runners out from behind the plate or the outfield."

Players will play best if selected at a position that suits there defensive skill, see Setting Up Your Defense in the rules http://brokenbat.org/rules#strategy

http://brokenbat.org/rules#players
  • Primary Position & Position List: continued
  • "... A player can gain position experience by playing at that position in any game (including spring training games) which over time will result in the position list expanding or changing. Additionally, with sufficient playing time at another position, a player's primary position can change. This, however, make take as long as a couple of seasons to occur."

So the absence of a fielding position in a player's profile isn't a restriction, simply an indication that the player lacks experience in any given position. To play well in a defensive position they will need the right fielding atributes and the benefit that comes from experience - you might have to put up with some errors as they develop.

I hope this helps

This just means that he hasn’t played enough games recently to be really good at any position (except DH). He’s only played in 250+ games over the last 10 years, so his positional experience has eroded. It looks like his best position overall is OF, but he’s not proficient at that position to be even be “adequate” anymore.

He’s got really good range, and decent fielding and an above average arm. He could probably be a nice center fielder for a few years.

While we are on this subject, I've noticed that even if you play a prospect at a certain position in all your spring training games for 3-4 years they still will not show the new position as one that they have learned.

A feature that allows prospects to learn a new position while playing in the minors might be nice. Maybe there would have to be a small cost associated with this. Perhaps a 5-10% decrease in their overall training rate while they learn the new position.
