I've never paid too much attention to it, but I noticed the other day that there is quite some overlap in numbers for player potential...

Example: I had an "above average" 3rd baseman who went up to 98 for SI. But then I had a "very good" potential outfielder who maxed out at 103.

This makes me wonder how much attention I should be paying to a player's listed "potential" when drafting a player or picking up free agents. What do you other managers look at mostly when trying to decide if you want a player?

And for Steve, are there actual set numbers in the system for "potential"? (I.E. "above average" is 80 to 100, "good" is 90 to 110, etc.)

There is also a level of scouting uncertainty, so the scouts might think highly of a player who isn't that good and think less of a truly great young player.
