Fabian Acuna-just called up
13 Pot
Comments
He can be a very good hitter. He can develop into a decent slugger. He has decent speed. He can be outstanding in the field. He has very good overall potential.
Under achieved in the minors and under developed hitting but has done good lately

Acuna performed better than Cowan in the minors. He is probably you best offensive option despite the lack of HRs. He is also a bit more experienced at 3B. While both players will hurt a bit as they learn the position better, Acuna will likely make fewer errors.

Cowan has a better arm. Maybe a more natural choice for 3B. But he is the sort of guy I could see struggling with the transition to the majors offensively. You never know, he will certainly hit more HRs than Acuna, but I suspect Acuna will be the better producer offensively (as he was in the minors).

Scarborough gives you speed and a veteran glove. He will make the fewest errors in the field. But Scarborough has the least upside as he is already fully developed.

I have a preference for youth and offense, so I would go with Acuna myself. Best offensive option, just don't expect HRs. A weak armed 3B, but hopefully his offense will compensate (except when playing Haverhill ;)).

I dunno. I think their minor league stats are close enough that it is a matter of personal taste. I prefer Cowan's.

If they both had "very good" hitting scouting I think it would be Cowan hands down. As it stands ... it looks like Acuna will be a low end VG, while Cowan may be a top end G. Their hit skill may end up very similar.

Acuna doesn't get full value out of his speed (doesn't steal), and isn't going to leverage his power skill very well. Assuming Cowan's hit skill doesn't dead end at 14, he stands a better chance of getting value out of his skill set.

I worry there is more risk with Acuna. Both his hit and power could miss scouting. He's a new draft prospect so there is more risk in his pot dropping.

If I had to choose one it would be Cowan. Tho I think both are worth a look if you can somehow accommodate.

Thanks gfor the feedback guys, you're not helping...lol

Acuna's pot just changed back to 14...14-13-14

Tend to agree Seca on this one. Acuna just seems a little under-developed at 24y, Cowan seems likely to fill out a little better. So hard to pull the trigger on this one but I knew this was coming for many seasons now.

This is a tough decision for sure.

One thing I noticed about Cowan is the dude seems to have fairly pronounced reverse splits in the minor leagues, and it's not really over a tiny amount of playing time. You could consider trying out a non-traditional platoon, with Cowan starting against right-handed pitchers and Acuna against left-handed. You could then look for other opportunities to work Acuna into the lineup against righties, like backing up 1B or DH or whatever.

Scarborough's performance is admirable, as you note, and I can totally understand why you're reluctant to move on from him. I don't know if there's room for him in a corner OF position, maybe?

Yes, the splits of Cowan are interesting to go along with the fact that he seems do better in every second season at a level. I think I'll try some version of a platoon but trying to find playing time anywhere else might be a chore. Redding is blessed with a young team full of talented players still training.

With possible HOF'er Dowd locked in at 1B for a long time to come http://brokenbat.org/player/198414
and Barger locked into LF for a bit more http://brokenbat.org/player/160494
and we're still battling for another championship.

Great problems to have! Thanks for all the advise but I fear it's like asking "what's the meaning of life"..no clear answer is going to appear before my eyes .

Cowan is the play here. Hiccup at his AAA promotion at first, but he seems to have figured baseball out. Chicks dig the long ball.

Think I've decided...Cowan will be given a full shot at 3rd. I think his BC/PD will play bigger at these higher levels along with his better GB/FB ratio, and of course "clicks dig the long ball" lol
