Hey folks

Would anyone mind helping me understand my analysis of this catcher on my roster? I like his hitting skill and plate discipline, and he's had some pretty good years in terms of avg, but would you be ok with him as your catcher? Or would you not let him near your staff because of his low defense?

My only other option at catcher right now is this guy, who is a catcher by secondary position. Sexy arm strength but also low defense:

Thanks!

Carneglia is not a catcher, he's just a dh. He doesn't even have a position he is rated at. I've not seen that before.

The other guy would make a decent backup catcher. I like his arm strength. Fielding isn't so important. But his 11 pot means he's close to topped out which is why I say backup. I fear he'll be a boat anchor offensively.

This is going to be controversial and take it with a grain of salt but I believe catcher has some significant impact on a team but I don't believe it's a visible thing. Just my gut talking but I think there is an effect that carries over to the pitching staff. Not sure how much is defense and how much is position knowledge. Of course it's just my theory based on a comment Steve once made. It may be totally baseless.

100% go with Joseph Thompson at C. He has a great arm, and fielding and range have little to no impact. Play the other guy at DH and possibly 1B.

For a bit of perspective, last season in LL6 I used 3 catchers primarily. One was an older guy that I dropped when my 24 yr old was ready for the show. One had a fielding rating of 6, the other an 8. In a combined 114 games they made 1 error and had 5 passed balls. So as the the other were saying, low fielding for a catcher has very little effect.

I had pretty low expectations based on the original post. I still was not prepared for what I saw ... :)

I don't think its fair to say fielding has no impact. If you look at career numbers for passed balls there is a noticeable difference with a bit of fielding. (A season is often too small a sample to see a difference).

Little impact is fair. Even if passed balls double I think you could argue the SI could be better spent elsewhere.

Many, many thanks for everyone's input and for the discussion. I've changed my terrible catcher Cameglia (http://brokenbat.org/player/85226) into a DH as suggested, assigned Thompson (http://brokenbat.org/player/119923) as catcher exclusively against LHP, and assigned Aragon (http://brokenbat.org/player/103713) as catcher exclusively against RHP.

Hopefully that's the best combination of things.

Cheers! Have a great season, all!

Looks good. :)

And this is what I get for defending fielding on Cs. My gold glove 15 fielding backstop allowing 2 PB in the same inning

I agree, the second guy can play catcher, but has limited value. I just dropped a catcher a couple days ago who went to the High Point Devils with only 2 claims. I'd take a look on the FA and Waivers. Good chance you can find an upgrade.

agree with Rock, catcher is one of the easiest positions to find on waivers - veterans or prospects. 12 pot overall can be plenty for a catcher if you find the right build
