*WARNING: full-scale rant ahead*

So we just lost our playoff series (again), going down 1-4. I knew when we lost the first two games that it was up for us, because what does a 55-25 home record matter when the playoffs come around?

Against a team we were TWENTY GAMES better than this season: 103-57 (and that includes going 2-4 with the kids in for the last six games) to 83-77. They were three games over .500 with a +2 RD, while ours was +180.

We were 7-3 against them this season (and 5-5 in both 2027 and 2028).

Avg Score (season): 4.8 - 3.7
Average score H2H with this opponent this season: 4.4 - 2.9
Avg. Playoff score this season: 1.6 - 3.2

Lets look at season numbers:-

First half runs scored: 332
Second half runs scored: 439

First half runs allowed: 255
Second half runs allowed: 336

Avg Score first half: 4.15 - 3.19
Avg Score second half: 5.49 - 4.2
Avg Score (season): 4.8 - 3.7

In league play we didn’t have one single stretch post-ASG where we went 1-4, not one, and just two overall.

Opponent starting rotation and ERAs, followed by playoff results:-

Webster (L) - 5.44; W 5-1; 6.1 IP, 6H, 1 ER, 1 HR, 1BB, 5 K
Arellano (R) - 2.56; W 3-2; 6.1 IP, 3H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Villanueva (R) - 3.44; L 2-3 (10); 7.2 IP, 9H, 2 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 5 K
Vega (L) - 6.46; W 2-0; 6.1 IP, 5H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
Kline (R) - 7.32; 4 IP, 4H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 HB, 1K (Villegas (R) - 4.63 ERA; W 4-2; 4 IP, 5H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3K)

Yeah, we were shut down over five games by some hot garbage. Our bats:-

Game 1, lost 1-5: 7/33, 2 2B, 1 HR, 1 BB, 6 K
Game 2, lost 2-3: 4/31, 3 BB, 9 K
Game 3, won 3-2: 12/40, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 BB, 7 K
Game 4, lost 0-2: 6/34, 3 BB, 4 K
Game 5: lost 2-4; 10/36, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 BB, 4 K

A horrendous tale of woe. I’d grant games 2 & 3 were going to be tough, but we actually won one of those. We have consistently struggled to hit really bad pitching, which makes no sense at all. We hit just .224 for the series, and some of the individual numbers are horrific:-

Ortiz (defending two-time MVP and contender for a third this season, .330 AVG): 5/22, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 0 BB, 7 K
Parisi (.264 AVG): 4/21, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 0 BB, 5 K
Waters (.277 AVG): 2/14, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 3 K
Berger (.287 AVG): 1/8, 1 K
Fletcher (.261 AVG, including .170 pre-ASG, .352 post ASG): 0/10, 3 BB, 3 K
Alarcon (.246 AVG): 1/18, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 2 K
Jorgensen (.276 AVG vs LHP): 1/8, 2 K

Of the four hitters who actually showed-up three were my in-season signings that turned my offence around: Fisher, Quiroz and Sherman. Everyone else returned to their early season whiffing, which came out of nowhere (both then and now).

Oh, and Bass who lost game two gave up 3 runs on two homers - after giving up 10 all season, in 29 GS and 177 IP. But we had a playoff ERA of 2.86 which is in line with our 3.30 season ERA. It’s just our bats forgot to show up.

May as well have played the rookies all series, or just tossed a coin five times (which looks like what happened).

And yes, its just a game. Maybe I need to get out more. But this vent will help me move on.

I will accept comments, criticism, over-earnest fawning and sympathy. In any order.

I know someone who can empathize.

In my league, Denton won the west and Warsaw won the east.

Denton was 9-1 vs Warsaw in inter-division play.

Guess who won the championship in 5 games?

Yep. Warsaw.

Hey, we paid serious bucks for psychologists during the playoffs to motivate the team, it was not a fluke!

Heh. :) Psychologists, eh?

I'd be grumpy too if a guy like Vega knocked me out. That's harsh. (Tho hot garbage may be a little unfair to some of the other guys in the rotation).

160 game seasons are about finding the best team. Best of 7s only show who was hot. Dinos had a sweep in last year's playoff - all it meant was my defense-first CF went off for 1.36 OPS. Not a moritorium on team strengths or design philosophy.

I understand the frustration tho. Dinos had a crucial 3 game series against Birmingham towards the end of this season. Dinos emphasize defense over offense. The A's cut a few corners on defense for more offense. I found the losses in the first 2 games frustrating not just b/c they were losses, but b/c I felt I was getting outplayed defensively. When games are important, you hope they stay true to form. Small samples don't always cooperate.

I do think the red trophies for runners-up are a really nice touch. And at some point you start to see the gate receipts from these playoff games as a significant part of the prize.

Lombard had a great season. Good luck in 2031!

My lights out closet picked a bad time to blow a save. http://brokenbat.org/game/2364193. The good news, still have a game 7 at home.

@Seca - thanks, it was a great season and very enjoyable, and I'm already getting over the playoffs.

But I have often wondered about form, and staying hot. I've wondered if slow starts to the season were down to my regulars not playing in preseason, and I wondered about sitting my regulars for the last week of the season in the event that made them 'cold' for the playoffs (it would explain a lot). I'm sure there are plenty of examples to the contrary and I doubt the game has that level of complexity, but it did cross my mind.

Gave up 18 runs in two games but still finished with a 3.44 era. Got no help from offense (.232/.268/.683), but managed to steal a 7 game series.

Guess pitching and defense (only 1 error by a pitcher) came through. The lack of offense has me a bit worried for next season though.

Congrats to JK13 (Sumter) for a fine season!

That is an interesting thought about form. My regulars got the last game of the season off - and we went on to lose the first 2 playoff games. ;)

There are games in this genre that have a form property that influences performance. I can think of some where playing time did positively affect this variable.

Nothing in the manual about this. I manage my team thinking form is a thing. But that's more "this guy has been bad - he's going to keep being bad" than "gotta play this guy or his form will drop".

Also possible that players play better/worse at different part of the season. I have no idea if that is in the game, but it could be a hidden variable. Its hard to measure.
