I wouldn't sweat it too much, ESac. I don't see a keeper in that group.

You might luck out with a 12 POT on one of the “above average potential” guys. Might be worth a shot, but I wouldn’t count on anything great. Still, the worst you’ll do is a C&R.

Not sure I completely agree with that generalization, but Levine is definitely the best choice here. Usually the Very Good is going to be the better option. But I pass up Very Goods if they have really bad scouting reports (e.g. "will never be a decent hitter" or a lefty who is "very fast" and "amazing in the field" but has no hitting reports).

You're right, it was something of a generalization and should have come with some qualifiers. I would only consider a "never be a decent hitter" if his fielding skills were likely to be off the charts or if there really are no better options, but usually I avoid them like the plague - and certainly in round 1.

I'm between:
OF Puerto Rico Juan Abreu 21 6' 0" 197 R R He can be a good hitter. He can develop into a decent slugger. He has decent speed. He has good overall potential
P Cuba Ricardo Rendón 19 6' 4" 223 R R He can be a strike out pitcher. His breaking ball can be exceptional. He has good overall potential.
I don't have many pitchers in my minors if that even makes a difference.

Take the pitcher all day long, especially since your minors are lacking pitching depth. Honestly, that hitter doesn't look amazing anyway. I typically look for hitters with the "very good hitter" tag or better. There are exceptions of course, but I personally like guys who can hit. However, many of the best teams consider "good hitter" to be the minimum, so go figure.

But I digress, take the pitcher for two reasons. One, you need pitching depth and you can never have too much pitching. Two, his scouting report is very strong for a "good potential" pitcher. I wouldn't be surprised if you snag a 13 POT pitcher, which would be a nice round 3 pick.

@Vols - have to agree with Mig on all counts.

(edit): and LOL, there you, a totally unexpected 11 POT. Really bad luck there, had a great report. :(

@Mig, I have guys on my team who don't have a hitting tag at all, but they are there either they have good defense or good BC/PD combination.
