Pitching (my thoughts and suggestions for Harrisburg Warriors)

Setup the starting rotation.
  • For me Castillo doesn't have the stamina to start
  • Barrera does and could be promoted, but he lacks control (I don't like low control numbers and tend to cut players like this but I have seen other teams with successful pitchers with low control)
  • Franco also has the stamina to start

Setup the bullpen with what is left-over
  • Castillo may not have the stamina to start but I reckon he is currently Harrisburg's best quality pitcher and would try him at closer
  • Navarro has good pitching skills and might be good as set-up
  • This means finding a new role for Ventura his low stamina means he might only worklooking at minor league pitching to see if someone is ready to develop through experience (rather than training). There doesn't appear to be anyone suitable on Harrisburg's development roster at the moment.
  • I would begin promoted pitchers at RHS, LHS with low pitch counts or at long relief where they can't pitch their hearts out in "blown games"
  • Finally make sure you aren't over-pitching your pitchers; bring the pitch count down if they start to "implode" and give up big innings regularly during games

Fielding
Defense is ignored by many owner / managers, or at least sacrificed in order to field good batters, but then many wonder why their pitchers don't appear to perform well.

Well know this, good fielding will help out your pitchers; and good pitching will help out your fielders. They are interdependent.

Set up your defense (my thoughts and suggestions for Harrisburg Warriors)

Infield first
  • C - for me Fowler doesn't have sufficient arm to play catcher
  • 1B - Morgan and Bishop are RH; LH are more suited to this position, but whilst other fielding skills are not important here if I have a LH with good fielding skills, it seems sense sensible to play him here
  • 2B - Porter is a "below average fielder"; I would replace him as fielding skills are important to 2B, 3B and SS; also all three roles are best suited to RH throwers
  • 3B - Perez has sufficient arm and range, but his fielding number is low; however he is young enough that he may improve with training and experience.
  • SS - Baxter is a LH but so I would move to the outfield; Murphy has sufficient fielding skills but probably more suited to 2B
  • It takes players 2-3 years to adapt to new positions so it is better to move younger players; but I'd rather have a player with the right fielding attributes than one without.
  • Morgan, Shelton and Hurley all have good fielding skills and could play at 2B, 3B and 2B respectively. Given my comments above I would try to use them to strengthen the infield despite their age
  • I like to have a back-up at C, 2B, 3B, and SS; these are specialist positions. All the others are a bit more interchangeable.

Outfielders
  • I then split up the OFs into LH and RH hitters to face RH and LH pitching respectively; obviously a SH can do either or both
  • LHB Perez, Baxter, Barron and Murphy have the fielding attributes to play any of the outfield positions and the others need good range at LF; and need good arm at RF; both arm and range at CF
  • the OF with best fielding skills would play CF so I take the view a bit of fielding does no harm; but I have no idea whether brokenbat takes account of this
  • no fielding attributes are required at 1B or DH
  • RH are the same LHB batters: LF needs range; RF needs arm; CF needs both; if your players has none of these then DH is the only option.
  • If I have more than one or two players with no fielding skills I generally cut the weakest of these, although I look to find room somewhere for exceptional batters where possible

Final thoughts
Once I have my fielding lineup vs LH and RH pitching I then sort out your batting order.

This is the baseline from which to improve. To this point it has not required drafting, waivers or free agency but it may now highlight some gaps to fill, usually key fielding positions like C, 2B, 3B, SS and CF.

So now you will look to pick-up waivers, hire free agents or draft youth but this should be for very specific reasons:
  • To replace starters with someone better at that position
  • To replace starters with someone equally good but with better batting attributes or more pace for base-running
  • To deepen your major league squad with backups for infield positions
  • To have suitable players on the development to replace your major league players as they age (but this is a mid to long term strategy)

I have managed Applewood Crossing since 2013 and been promoted three times in four seasons using this approach. It is not easy to balance current and future success but I think it can be done.

Remember you are not playing a computer, there can only be one league winner and your opposing mangers will be trying things out too. If they are beating you; scout your opposition and see what they are doing to be successful.

I scout the opposition and there are a number of successful teams that have used a totally different approach and have been successful so I don't believe this is the only way to approach brokenbat, but it is better to have some kind of plan than none.

Please don't lose heart, read the manual first and then look to drafts and trades to build from there.

You have no way to influence either the developing of young players or the scouting of them.

But I believe I have the choice of which draftees I keep and which young prospects / old-timers I pick-up that everyone else missed. I first ensure players have the fielding attributes to play in a position then look at batting skills

I have signed players in their thirties that no one else wanted and they had all-star seasons for Applewood Crossing. Take Norm Hoffman and Eduardo Torres for example; or Howard Hahn who pitched over 40 innings a season three years in relief for 16 wins, seven losses, 3 saves and 18 holds with ERAs of 2.17, 2.08 and 1.50.

There are gems to be had, go get 'em. I very much enjoy brokenbat and hope you will too

It's also easy to say you don't win waiver claims when you're simply trying to get high end players. It's a lot better to look at players that are younger with high potential. They will take longer to come up but in the mean time you can always find gap players to plug in until they are ready. The key in a rebuild is to be patient, and sometimes a little lucky to get a few claims and drafting players

I love the fact that you have dedicated your time to explain us these tips.
I've already took in consideration many of those tips (for example, reading the game strategy section of the game manual and assign players their defensive role based n their defensive skills) but still,it's really hard.

But it's true that many of us tend to buy players based on their batting skills ignoring the defensive skills that are really important.
In free agency I've seen some really good players in defence and I have someone in AAA that is ready to go to major. But the batting skills of these guys are really poor and I don't know what to do.

If you have the time to check also my team for some tips I'd be grateful sir.

A quick rule of thumb is that defense is most important on the infield; SS, 2B and 3B. SS and 2B especially you can sacrifice offensive skill in favour of defense.

The outfield is less important and there you can favour offensive skill over defense. This being Broken Bat, outfielders should have a good arm as their primary defensive skill, followed by range. Outfield errors result in runners advancing 2 bases, but the ability to throw out runners at 3rd and home more than makes up for that. Throw in good offensive skills and you can offset any defensive lapses.

It seems to me that Outfield Assists have been drastically reduced, starting with season2017.
Is that correct, Steve?

It'd mean Range is now the main OF's skill.
As a matter of fact, me too give up hitting in favor of fieldin in my SS, and for CF as well (18 Range, 19 Arm)

Yes
Rebuilding is possible
I inherited a team mired in debt and lost over 100 games five seasons ago and now they are finally in first place and hopefully will regulate up after winning the title this season

It has taken time and effort researching and tracking players. I haven't had many waiver claims but one has to look for the right players their team needs, now and plan for the future

You also must understand the workings of the game, as stated above or one will never find any level of success

the fact is that here in BB there's the relegation system so it's painful to see your drastic-disastrous team go from, for example,3d div to 6 and could be much more hard to go back to higher div.
I think the first thing to take into consideration is to know a team before become owner of it.
