My Closer is up to $5.35M this season. Probably not overpaid given the typical Closer salaries, but I certainly a bit of cash.

I'd have to agree. Closers are generally way overpaid in the game. While Starters are really vastly underpaid on average. It kind of works out that way, but really encourages people to play without a Closer. I think the Closer role is valuable enough that I'm willing to pay their crazy extortion money ;)

I know. De Smet had 2 All Stars and 2 sub-4 ERA seasons in the span of 3 seasons and never got above 1.5 million.

And it gets stupider, too. All Star VĂ©lez got a 500k raise, while Wilkins, who was already above the minimum salary, got an extra 950k for hitting 23 homers, while Rowe had a very late season surge to make his stats look good and got 800k. God knows what algorithm would pay more for a .258 hitter than a All-Star with 52 SBs

At one point way back when I had a weaker farm, every year I'd sign a vet reliever and make him my closer, let him rack up like 40 saves, then cut him the moment he wanted a raise. Worked really well.

Now I just don't have a closer, and spread it out among my various arms. I had one guy with 19, another with 10, several with 3-5. I'm still more likely to allot saves to guys who I know will leave next year though.

Problem with doing that, is that you might be giving up saves by not having your best guy in the game. That's why I pay the extorsion fees.

@NotGood88 League level makes a difference too. The higher you get in league level, the higher your franchise fees, and the more money players demand.

To make matters worse, players look at the last three seasons (I think) to determine what they should be getting paid. That's why it can be financially damaging for a high level team to sign on a player from a low level club. A guy with a 1000 OPS in LL-VI, might only have a 700 OPS in LL-II, but they will expect the LL-II salary of a guy hitting 1000 OPS.

Anyone seen a jump in salary like this before: Danny Cartwright ?

I assume because he needs to cover health insurance premiums after playing 151 of 160 games last season?

Shortstops who can hit? Yeah, that's gonna cost ya. Wouldn't be surprised if it goes to five or six in the next couple seasons.

Yeah, SS get paid a lot just for showing up. Consider Scanlon. He fluctuated back and forth between SS and OF between 43' and 46', and you can see how it had a direct impact on his salary demands each season.

My closer lat season, Larson, had 52 saves, 2.26ERA,1.114WHIP, All Star and All League awards and his salary went from 3.10 million to 3.0 million this season - down $100,000 I guess I should consider myself lucky.
