Basically, I'm wondering if my switching back and forth could be slowing the process? Does the position proficiency training continue at the same pace? Or can it build speed with uninterrupted training? Thanks.

Depending on where the guy is starting from, he might not end up at 3 for either position. Training a guy until he is at least 2.8 or so in the position will give you some confidence he can cap out in that given position without too much more training.
