If you judge him purely by his visible skills, you would never guess it. If Isales was my player, I would be concerned whether he has already topped out in SI. Are his skills too low to really translate to the majors? He might have a bit more SI in him, but probably not a lot. Otherwise, a lot of his other signs look good. His minor league numbers are good, and he didn't have a history of giving up lots of minor league HR, which has been one of his big problems in the majors. Taking a look at the minors and amateur stats Id say he has the chance to be a star for your team. Id give them at least one more full season before making any big changes | ||

Isales - 10/10/12/19 - 68.9% K, .309 BAA, 1.643 WHIP. Espinoza - 17/20/16/19 - 67.7% K, .211 BAA, 1.079 WHIP. |

I often see high Velocity + high Control pitchers with low CoS and Movement throwing HR derbies. Velocity is great for Ks, but when its their only tool and they have high control, every pitch is a meatball. Movement guys seem to really need the Control to keep the walks down. In general I think Control helps all pitchers in combination with other pitches. But if they only have Control, they are just throwing batting practice. You generally want your pitchers to have high Control plus a couple other tools. The only possible exception is guys whose primary tool is Velocity. GB/FB is probably also a factor in that case. Just be aware that high GB/FB is good for keeping the ball in the park, but doesn't help a lot versus extra base hits in large parks. In general I think its most important to have Control for a Movement specialist and Velocity for a CoS specialist. A Velocity specialist needs Movement, but can also benefit from CoS (and maybe Control is less helpful). A Control specialist needs other tools to actually get players out, otherwise they are just pitching batting practice. Updated Sunday, March 28 2021 @ 7:43:51 am PDT |
