I'm specifically wondering if players need experience in more pressured situations. I have a relief pitcher, age 25, had a reasonably good year out of the bullpen last year, wanted to try him as my closer. Had a brilliant spring and then...yikes. Three blown saves already.

Possibly. No one knows for sure. But I wouldn't be too concerned about numbers at this point in the season. It is still too early to be reading into the small number of stats gained.

The opposition in spring training is so mixed, it's hard to get a good estimation on player.

Maybe so, but is clutch performance a thing?

That's for us to decide. Steve gives us the tools, but we have to solve the puzzle ourselves. Look at things like RISP and try to find a pattern.

I have a spreadsheet somewhere which spits out strand rate for pitchers when I paste in the stat page. :)

"Do players need experience?"

It'd be a lot cooler if they did. (Dazed and Confused inspired quote)

I think clutch is a thing. Just move players around a lineup for major league 500 ABs and you'll see clear performance dodges, dips, ducks, dives and dodges. We've had players who were certain for the clean up spot, but their LOB numbers were disappointing.
