The best way to get rid of the debts, is to know what caused it and try to repair if you can.

Honestly there are two main expenses and you can control only one during the season.

a) Salary: Salary is the main expenses in a team, it combines the major, the minors, the manager and coach salaries. But you can only control the salary of the manager and players. You can see what is the total of the weekly salary dividing the player salary in ten (each economy update it gives you the weekly salary so you don't need to calculate it if you haven't signed any free agent).

The manager is a assets that is not yet coded as it should work, so having a high salary one is a waste, change it for one with the same skills but with the lowest salary.

b) Ballpark maintenance: This expense is one that could cause a bankruptcy to many teams if they don't know what is the assistance they could get in a season. An easy parameter is to check the last season average and see if the team has improved a little or not in their win-lose. You can put your ballpark like 5k more than the average if you think your team will do the same work than last season, you can have a greater ballpark if you think your team will rock the league. But remember, once the season start, there is no way back.

So, the advice is to get ride of the higher salary if the player is not doing a great job, you can find other players with lower salary that can do the similar.

Get ride of those minor players that aren't good or very good average.

Yes, those are the two big expense components that you can control.

Also, winning and promoting to a higher league will help the income side, but that isn't always that easy.
