If a pitcher pitches 0 innings and gets 0 unearned runs, they have no ERA?

Division by 0.

His ERA is actually approaching infinity.

The pitcher didn't surrender any runs.

I would guess it would show as --- until he either gets an out or surrenders a run.

0 / 0 can actually either approach 0 or infinity depending on which 0 is bigger. So in reality his ERA is somewhere between 0 and infinity. If the 0 runs is bigger than the 0 outs, than it approaches infinity. If the 0 outs are bigger then the 0 runs if approaches 0.

Steve uses the "-" symbol to represent a number that is somewhere between 0 and infinity.

I could be wrong, but I think MukilteoMike was amused by Rock, who was doing some 1AM-Friday-night math. :)

You were correct in your OP. They have no ERA.

Before a season starts, pitchers have 0IP. Batters have 0AB. They don't have infinite ERAs or BAs. They don't have ERAs or BAs.

If a batter walks in his first plate appearance of the season, he does not go to the top of the BA table. He doesn't have a BA, and won't until he registers an official AB.

A pitcher who pitches without surrendering a run or recording an out is akin to a batter walking. He doesn't get an ERA until one of those 2 events occur.

He would however go to the top of the OBP table with 1.000 with that walk. The pitcher would also register a 99.99 WHIP with that walk if he was taken out immediately.
