I had originally thought that defense would be used for determining PBs, but now I'm thinking maybe its range. Which would mean defense has little value for a catcher (except maybe for dropping the ball on third strike?) So which value is used to determine how good the catcher is at catching poorly thrown balls?

Fielding determined passed balls, but pitchers control also played a roll. He also hinted thay a catchers fielding abilities can help or hurt a pitcher get outs.

Yes, your backstop had a terrible 2020 with passed balls, but look at his previous three years and you'll see he averaged a passed ball every 20 games. Unless you end up throwing wild guys at him in 2021, look for him to rebound.

My starters this past year had pretty good control... and he actually improved on his PB rate after I brought in some rookies with less control. His CS rate has been terrible ever since I took over the team too... Not sure how to affect that?
