Does anyone have any idea how defensive replacements are chosen? I'm having zero luck with it.

For example, I have a guy I'm training in the outfield (just to be clear, he's learning the outfield in the majors). He doesn't have OF listed, obviously, has 17 range and 12 arm. I got a free agent solely for defensive purposes. He was fully qualified at OF with 17 range and 19 arm. He would never come in despite my settings to replace the starting OF for defense. When my starting OF made the final out in the 8th and still wasn't replaced for defense even though we were winning by two, which is the absolute perfect spot for a defense sub, I lost all hope and dumped the defensive player.

Anyone have any clues about how to make the moronic managers figure this out?

If you figure it out, please do tell since it seems random to me. Then again I'm losing to the teams behind me in the standings and winning against the teams in front of me, so I'm just generally confused right now about how this game works...

Does anyone have any idea about this? It's driving me crazy!

Sometimes it's clear the manager needs to get off his rear and make a move, but he doesn't. In recent games I've had a 3B/C pinch hit for an outfielder who then goes out to the field. Not only does he not have position experience, his defensive skills are 8/6/15. Get someone else out there! Nope. He plays.

It's easy to get pinch hitters in, but seemingly impossible to get defenders in. This needs help in a big way!

Can you give me a specific game example and I'll try to explain why it happened as best I can. Perhaps the algorithm needs improving.

Yes, the managers do strange things, sometimes. Pinch running decisions usually make sense to me, and I can't remember a single instance of a defensive replacement on my team - I've only allowed it for a handful of players, anyway.
Some of the pinch hitting decisions I've seen have made me think about alcohol testing for managers, though. Generally, I think it got a little better with the ability to set innings for pinch hitters - since then, lefty specialists do actually get to face some of the good lefties from time to time rather than just righty pinch hitters, no matter how much worse than the original lefties they were.
This is a weird one on my team, though:

Xavier Velez is a lefty outfielder who can more or less hold his own against lefty pitching with a lifetime VLHP of .243, so I don't want him pinch hit for before the ninth inning - no point in messing with my defense for relatively little improvement. In the ninth inning, my manager does bring a pinch hitter, but it's not righty Russell Higgins, who would have been available and with a lifetime VLHP of .260 albeit little power, could at least have been seen as a bit of an improvement. The pinch hitter is my backup catcher Harvey Koch, the absolute worst hitter on my entire majors roster, who is even worse against lefties than he is against righties and has just barely cleared the Mendoza line in one of his three seasons. No, I don't want any more management settings, but if there was one guy I could select to never ever be a pinch hitter, that's him.

Something I posted in March 2014, before the option for innings were implemented.

Its not perfect, less so today in my mind, because now I have guys like Hall starting at 1B and 3B, and Meyer starting at RF and 1B.

I've been changing my settings constantly to try to get the defensive replacements in. I'll leave it alone for a few days so I can tell you for sure exactly how I had it set for an example.

This game here. Roberts(RH) comes into pinch hit for Battle(LH) in the bottom of the 5th. He shouldn't be the first choice for PH since he is proving to be a terrible hitter, but he also isn't an OF and his defensive skills are very weak. Ordonez is also a RH and an OF with better avg and defensive skills so he makes more sense as PH. But he stays on the bench. Now in the case of Roberts I have the 'replace for defense' checked, but he doesn't come out. He stays in for one more AB (6th) and makes 2 outs in the 7th before Ordonez apparently replaces him. It's not clear when that happens, it isn't mentioned in the game summary. He is credited with 2 FA and 2 PO which happened in the 7th; two fly balls to RF.

So why does he PH and why does he stay at RF when he clearly isn't the better defender?
