Just wondering if their is any difference in learning speed wise: playing a new position as a full time starter in the majors or learning a new position in the minors?

Yes

If you have a minor leaguer playing a specific position, he will gain position experience at a moderate rate.

If you have a big leaguer playing a position everyday, then he will gain position experience at a higher rate. If he is only playing that position as a backup / platoon player, he will gain position experience at a lower rate.

Would it be beneficial to have your players learn several positions or just specialize in one or two?

Big league experience trumps all.

It really depends on your team needs. Most players will probably only play one or two positions when they get to the big leagues. But its also nice to have a utility man.

So what you're saying is keep most of the players limited to one or two positions, but it is nice to have a utility guy?

Well, most players aren’t suited for playing every position – because of limited range, arm strength, fielding, throwing hand or something else. Find the positions that they are good fits for and that you may eventually need to fill and train them up at those position(s).

Like in real baseball, some players will have a good bat, but lousy defensive skills across the board. If you’ve already got a DH, then you may want to plug them in at less demanding defensive positions (ie. first base, corner outfielder).
