The AI would substitute the player chosen at this position for important pinch hit at bats. For example, losing by a run, man on 2nd, 8th inning. Instead of the AI substituting pinch hitters by position, this designated Pinch Hitter could come in for any regular positional player for important, game-changing at bats, and then would always/usually be substituted out for defense later if necessary. It could make those "all bat, no field" free agents (and veterans) somewhat more valuable. | ||

I'm puzzled that Schwartz was usually the first ph choice vs LHP. Did that have something to do with his age? He was 36. Some sample games; https://brokenbat.org/game/3674777 https://brokenbat.org/game/3674789 https://brokenbat.org/game/3674873 Not chosen at all in that last game. |

Whaley hits a home run to left field of 378 feet. Durant grounds to second base. Durant is thrown out at first by White. Davies hits a triple to center field. Myers grounds to third base. Myers is thrown out at first by Owen. Davies holds at third base. Paz comes in to pinch hit for McFadden. Paz flies out to left field. Laredo 4, Burlington 2 There was no RHB or S on the bench so why ph? McFadden is a LHB with a lifetime .259 vs LHP. Paz is a LHB with a lifetime .189 vs LHP. WTF? Defensively they are both 1B and McFadden is a LH thrower while Paz is a RH. This substitution makes no sense whatsoever. |
