It's certainly possible that I'm missing something but I'm having a difficult time fully comparing my pitchers' stats on the basis of the number of pitches they've thrown. The IP stat, while useful, has two drawbacks. The first, and most important, is that it does not tell you how many pitches were required for each out. The second is more procedural, the stats page seems to be confused about how to order IP from greatest to least and it's not possible to actually order your team's pitchers based on that stat.

Because IP does not directly address the number of tosses required for a pitcher to gain an out I'd like to see NP instituted as a stat on the Statistics page. I'm not sure if this is entirely possible, though the fact that this information is recorded in game reports suggests that it is possible. If it's not a huge amount of trouble I'd love to see this as a column on the pitchers' stats as it would provide a more reasonable understanding of sample size for all of the other pitchers' stats.

We’ve tried to provide the same statistics that are generally available for MLB teams. Usually, the number of pitches in a game in interesting from a pitch count perspective. But cumulative pitches aren’t really usually stated (although I see the ESPN does sometimes quote pitchers per game started). Anyway, why the interest in total pitches thrown?

The inability of sorting by Innings Pitched has to do with the fact that is a character string (in order to support 1/3 and 2/3 innings) not a number and thus sorts according to string rules.

That makes sense. I don't suppose it's actually that important, it just seemed like an interesting thing to track when it occurred to me last night. If I can recall why I was so intent on it I might be able to explain but I suspect that it was just a random harebrained train of thought. In all likelihood I was really just interested in the number of pitches per putout but I could tally that if I decide I care enough.

Thanks for the reply.

Right now, we're not maintaining cumulative number of pitches across multiple appearances. So I'll add it to the list of things to consider.

Thanks,

If we were showing IP as x.0, x.1 and x.2 instead of x, x1/3 and x2/3, it would be a number that one could sort by. I would very much appreciate that, as so far the only sortable workload figure for pitchers is games, which is massively skewed between starters and relievers. A figure that's less dependent on the success of getting actual outs like number of batters faced or number of pitches would be nice to have, but as I don't think we have to worry about career workloads, I see that as a lower priority. It would be one more number to fit into the view, as well. Making innings pitched sortable should be a very minor change, however.
It's not like that would be very unusual or hard to understand for newcomers with even a faint understanding of baseball stats. It's what basically every common basepall statistics page does:

Yes, this is on the list for consideration. It's a little more complicated, because the format is stored in the box score record and also dynamically created on the statistics pages.

Sorry, I wasn't aware that this was actually a technical difficulty - it looked so simple to me. I thought it was just reluctance to move away from a cosmetically nicer but technically disadvantageous solution. Didn't mean to be pushy.

Okay...I made some improvements to sorting by innings pitched (IP). Should work fairly well in 99% of the cases.
