We've had the issue of inconsistent skills and stats elsewhere. If you do something on that, you may also want to look into the issue of the range and speed skills:
Currently, range and speed are independent, and they are both talents rather than acquired skills you train for - plus, range has the same meaning for infielders and for outfielders.
In reality, however, outfield range is mostly speed combined with the experience of seeing early where the ball is headed. I can't come up with any outfielders with superior range who are at the same time slow, like this guy here in the game: http://brokenbat.org/player/84196 Ellsbury, Gardner, Suzuki (in his prime at least) are all good examples of outfielders with good range being excellent baserunners, as well.
It's a different story with infielders. In his best years, Derek Jeter was an excellent baserunner - always known for his lack of range at shortstop. Look to Mark Teixera or Robbie Cano for the exakt opposite. Infield range is mostly a combination of reach, reflexes and footwork on the first two steps.
Possible ways to be more realistic:
  • Quick and dirty: Just correlate speed and range for future prospects
  • A little more sophisticated: Make outfield defense depend on speed or a combination of speed and range rather than range alone (that would mix offensive and defensive skills, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I would say).
  • The luxury version: Rename speed to baserunning and split range to two separate skills, infield range and outfield range. All three should have some acquired component, which, however, could be fully trained after about two years at the respective position in the minors.

This is not the case anymore. New prospects will have a correlation between speed and range. However, most of the players in the game were still created before this change, so it will take some time for this alteration to be effective at the big league level.
