Well...it's over now. The Wahiawa Bears close out the 2022 season as VI.19 champions, defeating the Schaumburg Bombers 4 games to 1.

At least these patchwork arms held up long enough to win promotion, I guess.

Heh...seems there were no 2023 posts. As for 2024, my apologies. At any rate...

What a difference two seasons make...two years ago, Schaumburg fought off Huron and Flint to win the East and promotion. After being relegated, the Bombers are back in VI.19, and sitting 19 games ahead of second place Georgetown, it's pretty clear the 'Burg is heading back to Div. V.

In the West, we see an actual pennant race, with five teams within 5 games of first place Carrolllton, and Temple a mere three back. The newly implemented EXWL, however, is predicting the Chiefs to get it together and zip past Carrollton by October.

WEST: there's a new leader atop the West: the Citrus Heights Crusaders! Currently riding a six game winning streak, the Cru have shot past both the Carrollton Cougars and Temple Chiefs to take control of the division. There is still a ways to go though, as the gap between Citrus Heights and Temple is a mere three games.

EAST: 19...is the magic number...yes it is...it's the magic number. The Schaumburg Bombers have run away with the East with, as Gus Johnson would say, getting away from the cops speed. The 2nd place Georgetown Yankees are 15 1/2 back, and are likely planning some offseason golf outings and whatnot.

As September ends, the East pennant is a foregone conclusion, as the Schaumburg Bombers are only a few days away from clinching the flag, with the Georgetown Yanks 19 games back and the first half of October to go. The magic number is 6, and the Bombers and Yanks are scheduled for four.

In the wild West, 4 1/2 games separate the Crusaders of Citrus Heights from the Temple Chiefs. The Chiefs' recent four-game losing streak has made the pennant race harder on them than I'd guess it should be, but unlike Georgetown, time is still on the Chiefs' side.

On the individual front, Barry McLaughlin is making a strong case for VI.19 MVP, as he's currently tied for the top batting average, has scored the most runs, boasts the highest on-base and slugging percentages and OPS, is a very close third in the RBI race and is sixth in home runs. The likely home run champion, mean while, will likely be either Chapel Hill's Alvin Barton (35 HR), Funky Cold Hector Medina of Carrollton (33 HR) or Makakilo's Troy Jackson (32 HR). The steals race has been dominated by Citrus Heights' Alonso Aragon, whose 87 swipes are a career high and dwarf the 55 compiled by Justin Reynolds (Flint).

On the mound, it's been the Year of Pretty Ricky, aka Enrique Carmona. Schaumburg's ace has picked up 16 wins on the strength of a 2.45 ERA and 176 strikeouts, though rotation mate Allen Hodges is the wins leader with 19. The battle for the Saves title is looking like it'll be decided on the final day, with two tied for the lead. Flint's Tony Abe and Oscar Villa of Greeley each have 33 saves, with Neil D'Amico of Georgetown on their tails, having compiled 31 saves. Silent Koichi Mori (Huron) has 30 saves, and Dak Ho Son (Schaumburg) and Harold Stuckey (Chapel Hill) each have 29 saves.

In the dying days of the regular season, the championship series is set. The Schaumburg Bombers will represent the East, and will be opposed by the Citrus Heights Crusaders out of the West. Given their domination of VI.19 this year, most pundits agree that Schaumburg losing the series would be a huge shock, and that the Cru might sneak a game, but the Bombers have simply been too strong this year.

Batting Leaders: Booker McLaughlin has been having a season worth telling the family about over Thanksgiving dinner, as barring something odd happening, he holds the highest batting average, has scored and driven in the most runs, and has the highest on-base and slugging percentages, not to mention the highest OPS. If McLaughlin isn't named league MVP, you'd have to shake your head and wonder what more he'd have to do.

Among the two categories McLaughlin does not lead, Alvin Barton of Chapel Hill will likely take the homer crown unless either Troy Jackson or Hector Medina go on a power binge. The steals crown, meanwhile, awaits the Crusaders' Alonzo Aragon, whose 99 swipes are well ahead of the 60 compiled by Flint's Justin Reynolds.

Pitching Triple Crown: Just call it the Year of Pretty Ricky. Schaumburg's ace, Enrique Carmona, has all but clinched the strikeout crown, as the only hurler in VI.19 to rack up 200 K's, and his 2.46 ERA has likely clinched the top spot on that board as well. His 20 wins might end up tied if teammate Allen "the Barber" Hodges can pick up his 20th victory against Huron, but Carmona is likely assured the league's pitching Triple Crown.

The saves title will be won by either Flint's Tony Abe (38) or Greeley's Oscar Villa (37).

A Fresh, New Start For Georgetown?

It's safe to say that the Georgetown Yankees are in a state of flux. Despite placing 2nd in the VI.19 - East league, the Yanks' new owner Qwantum released veteran manager Lewis Strickland with 3 games remaining for the 2024 season. He was replaced by the relatively younger Alfredo "Cactus" Vazquez. Despite his 47 years of age, Vazquez has displayed great results with his previous team the Rock Hill Wolves.

Qwantum echoed these sentiments in a recent media scrum stating, "Upon my arrival in the head office, the glaring issue I noticed was how this team seemed to stagnate for the past two years despite the talent it had in its possession. I made the decision to add some new blood in the coaching area. Sure it may have been controversial to some of the fans who grew accustomed to Mr. Strickland, but I saw a problem that needed to be addressed."

The Yankees owner also pointed out how Vazquez appears to have an ability to motivate his players which, in turn, results in better performances from players - young and veteran.

Another action taken by the new Qwantum regime was the recent release of veteran fan-favorite second baseman Matías Consuegra who closed out the 2024 season on the bench after returning from a 4-day stint on the disabled list. Consuegra (29) is currently on waivers and will become a free agent in 5 days. He ends his 7 year Yankees career with a career batting average of .243. The second baseman is a base-stealing threat and displays good fielding. He will certainly make a solid addition to any team that picks him up.

The Georgetown management have decided to no longer platoon that position and have giving the full-time position to their slugger Lorenzo Padilla who finished the season with impressive numbers batting in the cleanup slot.

Georgetown has also bolstered their pitching rotation with the much needed addition of a veteran left-handed starting pitcher. Former Alexandria Athletics all-star starter Vince Clarke has been signed by the Georgetown Yankees for $2.60M, a drop from his price last season. Despite this, Clarke is now the highest paid player in the Yankee roster. It's safe to say that management have high expectations for the star pitcher. He has seen better days but is still a solid hurler who can give a team wins in the double digits. The Yankees had been dying for another left-handed starter and now they got one. Clarke will be the #3 starter in the rotation after young pitchers Ramiro Herrera (L) and Keith Christian (R).

Rounding out the changes in the lineup and pitching rotation are some young talented prospects brought up from the minors.

The Yankees are still hoping to acquire a great defensive third baseman with some pop in his bat before the start of the regular season.

Qwantum ended the scrum with the following closing statement:

"Placing first in the league and winning the division title is always the goal, but we are careful to not lose the big picture which is consistency. A balance needs to be maintained which means sacrifices have to be made for the greater good. We have a few more deals in the works which we cannot disclose at this present time. But stay tuned."
